Mary’s perfume (John 12) | Games

Smelly games and lots of liquids make this lesson on Mary one worth spending a bit of time on. There are not many lessons that allow us to use so many different sensory textures so do take advantage of the opportunity.

Smell bags – I love this game, it sounds like a lot of work but really it’s very simple. You need some kind of container, a cloth bag works the best but cardboard boxes with salt shaker holes are just as easy. You then need to find some familiar smells, shampoo’s, perfumes, soap, chopped vegetables, spices, cleaning products, candles, fruit, flavoured crisps, you’ll be amazed at home many you can find even in a sparsely equipped homestead. Either place ‘the smell’ inside the container or onto a tissue inside the container and get the kids to identify the it.

Bucket logic – this is a simple logic problem great for older kids and repeated on the worksheet. You need a large container of water and two different size containers – but not measuring jugs. You also need either scales or a measuring rod to determine the correct amount. Read the worksheet for more details. Don’t worry about being too exact with the measurements just add the capacity of the two containers together and divide by 2.

John the Baptist (Matthew 3) | Craft

There are two main versions of this craft, and the one you choose should depend on your target age group, time and resources –  but as they both work so similarly so they have been posted together.

Version 1a (print-cut-thread)
This is a modification of a Roman sandal craft I saw in a shop, I snuck a quick photo of the concept and then had a long play with prototypes before settling on this! It comes out about the size of my hand and looks really convincing. PDF is here

The basic instructions are:
– print out the pattern,
– cut it out as one piece,
– hole punch the end of each bit that sticks out,
– thread a thin 1/4 cm ribbon through as a lace.

This version comes out a touch small to wear but despite the complex looking pattern is actually simpler than the version 2 and needs less supervision.

John the Baptist (Matthew 3) | Worksheet

John the BaptistIf you have older children and you’re not so much of a storyteller this is a perfect John the Baptist worksheet. It tells the same story as the teachers notes but gets the children to look up the scripture passages to fill in the blanks. It’s then followed by three discussion questions and a little maze.

If you wish you can use this worksheet as a group instead of telling the story, or you could use it as a leaders sheet.

Early Life of Paul – Escapes | Worksheet

07-D-E
Sometimes the fun can seem to lie in the games and the craft and not really in learning about the story. So, I thought I’d introduce a game that can be used to directly prompt questions about the 3 escapes in the story.

This is a simple game where you need a die per board and a pebble per child. (I use pebbles as they can be a prompt for Paul being stoned)

The game can be downloaded by clicking on the image. It’s designed on A3 / A4 paper.

Example questions.
– why is that on the board?
– what do you think the symbol at the end of the game is about?
– why would rain stop a sermon?
– do you think Paul was angry with the people who stoned him?
– who was Paul with during this escape?
– can you remember who became a Christian because of this escape?
– do you think it was important for Paul to go to all these places?
– do you think this was the end of Paul’s journeys….why?
……………….. do make up lots of your own!!!!
