Josiah (2 Kings 22) | Games

The hero in this story is the young Josiah, he is depicted as the child king and yet by the time of clearing the temple he is probably abut 26 years old, having reigned for 18 years. Yet he must have been, even as a child, a reliable king, to have reigned for 18 years.

Message paper fight – This game is totally unforgettable and any ‘typical little boys’ in your care will have a ball! prepare a big bag of scrunched up paper balls and tip them all over the room, don’t tell the children but on 3 pieces of paper write a bible verse before scrunching. Split your children into 2 groups and draw a line to divide your space into left and right. The children will act the part of the people clearing up the temple, but they decided to be lazy, and just throw the rubbish over to the other people to sort. Agree a signal to stop and then let them go, when they stop say the winning team is the one who found the treasure in the trash. They will probably look confused and then frantically start searching, if they don’t then prompt them!

King for a day – Have the kids imagine they are king for a day, make a simple paper crown (template download from here) and pass it round the circle. in a similar manner to ‘simon says’ have the other kids mime the kings request.

The Shepherd (Luke 2) | Craft

The Angelic song that filled the air was bound to be hummed by the shepherds for many years after. This craft concentrates of ways we may try and make the tune ourselves. This page explains how to make a range of simple instruments, you could set up different instruments on each table and have the children chose which one to make, or you could just chose one instrument type and make it as a group. Each instrument is rated , or with 3 being the loudest!

The Shepherd (Luke 2) | Worksheet

The-shepherd-Worksheet
This worksheet about the shepherd is more than just a game, the simple dice game comes at the end after a few discussion prompts and a refreshing of the bible verse. The sheet is designed to do in small groups, but if needed could be done simply in pairs.

For this sheet you will want to give the young people not only dice, but also some sort of counters as play pieces. The standard game has the children making sound effects each time they land on a ‘toppled over’ sheep, but if you have more time then you can add extra questions or activities for these squares.

The PDF can be downloaded by clicking on the image.

NOTE : This worksheet was updated in 2019

Essential Teachers notes:

The of Christmas is often done in many parts, the birth of John the Baptist, the annunciation, the journey to Bethlehem, the shepherds account, and later the wise men and Anna and Simeon. All these parts are hugely important but this story captures the most pivotal moment. Luke’s account of the night centres not on the mother and child as much as on the birth announcement, heaven sent, and those first visitors, the not so great Jewish men, unclean and un-respected.
