Though these little baubles are linked to the Herod the Great lesson they are suitable for any Christmas lesson as there are 3 different designs – The Magi & Herod, the Shepherd & Angel and Mary & Joseph. Including Herod on our Christmas decorations reminds us of the darkness that came with the joy, the strife that accompanied The Prince of Peace arriving.

Today’s hero is Herod the Great, because he shows us the gift of A CHOICE.

Essential Teachers notes:
This is a dark story, it is probably not the first choice for many, but if your group is looking for something different and has already covered the Christmas story multiple times this is an important element that is often overlooked. That Mary would not have exchanged all the gifts for one less mothers grief is unquestionable, the price of bringing Jesus into the world was felt by everyone he encountered in his early days.

The Rich Fool (Luke 12) Worksheet
This worksheet looks at the parable of the Rich fool as told, by Jesus, in Luke chapter 12. It references the bible passage as well as using the imagery that accompanies the rest of the lesson onsite. It’s a reflective exercise looking at the motivations behind the parable and the message Jesus may have wanted his listeners to hear. This worksheet would work well as an extension activity or review, for an individual or as small group work – many of the questions could work well as small group discus.

To complete the worksheet you will need some pencils, a copy of the story in some form (or a bible) and to turn your thinking caps on!

This perspective image is a wonderful way of summing up the Parable of the rich fool. One direction shows the delighted farmer with his abundant harvest spilling out from the barns, the other sees the landscape unchanged but instead of a smiling character a sheet covers a shape on the ground.

The parable of the Rich fool has so much imagery we can use. It’s a great story for Harvest about the power of sharing rather than hoarding resources, it’s also a parable that comes from a very common question that rabbi’s would be asked. These games use both those ideas to give you a range of activities, choose the best for your space, age range and time available.

Once they have made their towering barn get them to repeat it on a slight slope, one handed or with another ‘handicap’. For younger children find smooth building blocks and challenge them to make a tall tower.
