Abigail-Worksheet
This worksheet about Abigail is suitable for those of school age and above as it contains a lot of reading. The worksheet is designed to be printed in colour but will work well in grey scale.

The sheet consists of two areas, a reforming of the story and a decision diagram. The decision making diagram at the end of the sheet is best done with discussion and not alone. The sheet would be a good filler activity and probably shouldn’t take more than about 15 minutes of the lesson. The whole sheet could be done as a group.

The story of Abigail is at essence, a response of a wise woman to a group of hungry men. Normally for make posts i try and come up with a fun craft but this idea has been bouncing around pinterest and i think it fits perfectly with the story.

These have been called blessings bags, or homeless bags. They come with the simple idea that when you see the homeless you give them something little to help. If you live in a city then you may even be able to go out with some of the children and deliver some of these.

Rather than simply put one together myself, which will be specific to my context, I’ve used photographs from other sites. Click on the photo to read their posts.

The story of Abigail contains a donkey, it may not be that first element that comes to mind but this donkey loaded with food is the leader of the food trail that was lead to the feet of David. There is also another reason for including this craft here, Abigail lends itself well to food related activities and yet often food is difficult to work with, this then is a non-food option.

This tutorial is not very detailed, the making of the donkey is simple but the decoration is more up to you and can be tailored to the materials you have on hand. The donkey can obviously be used for many other biblical stories, or it could easily be crafted into a horse.

The hero in this story is Abigail, a lesson known bible character who stops the future king David from acting out of anger and attacking a household who would not give help. Abigail’s strength is conflict resolution and mediation.

Frogs and lily pads – Divide the children into groups of three and give each group three vinyl spots or hula-hoops. In each group there must be one ‘frog’ and two ‘tadpoles’. The objective is to get the frog from one side of the hall to the other, however the frog can only step on the spots or cross and the spots can only be moved by the tadpoles. Teacher can act as the ‘Pond Police’ making sure that no frog steps off the lily pads. (link into the servant taking food, and the idea that sometimes we need someone to help us move forward)

Abigail is today’s Bible hero because he showed us the gift of Mediation

Essential Teachers notes:
Abigail’s real skill is conflict resolution and so we are giving her the very grown up gift of mediation. While Abigail’s story is not so well known the life lessons from this passage are very relevant to the everyday struggles both children and adults face with the world. If you are not familiar with the story of abigail then you may want to read the short bible passage first and / or reading a bit behind her character online somewhere like preachersfiles. You may also have to explain / discuss the word mediation with the children.

Main Passage : 1 Samuel 25
